What Are the Benefits of Crane Scales?

While floor scales are a popular option in an industrial environment, crane scales are also useful. How do these cranes work, and what are the benefits of using them?

What Is a Crane Scale?

A crane scale is a type of heavy-duty hanging scale. The scale has a hook at the top that attaches to a crane; it also has a hook under the scale unit. You use this hook to hold the item you want to weigh.

When the item is hanging freely on the hook, you can read its weight on the scale's display. The item must be off the ground to give you a precise weight. This kind of scale only works when the crane has lifted the item and taken its weight.

Why Use a Crane Scale?

Crane scales have a few advantages. As long as you stay within the scale's weight limits, you can weigh just about anything that you can lift off the ground. Crane scales can typically hold more weight than regular hanging scales.

You might find it easier to use this kind of scale to weigh unusual items. For example, if you're working with something that is too large to go on a floor scale, then a crane scale is a viable alternative. You don't need space for the item to stand on.

A crane scale also works well with items that have unusual shapes. For example, if you need to weigh something that isn't flat enough to stay upright or balanced on a regular scale platform, then lifting the item might be the only way you can measure its weight precisely.

You might also find it useful to weigh items on a crane before you load them up for storage or transport. You'll be using the crane to move items anyway, so if you add a scale to its hook, you can check the weight of every item before you offload it. You get a quick and simple way of checking that you keep within allowed weight limits.

Crane scales are also relatively compact. If you install a floor scale, then you have to give up space for a large weighing platform. A hanging scale doesn't take up any floor space. It is also easy to attach and detach so you can easily move it around or store it away when you aren't using it.
